Why does steam come out of the pavments in New York, does anyone know?

It's the lava flow, which apparently flows, just 128 cm at it's closest point to the pavement. That's why the foundations of the houses in N.Y. can't be any more than 1 Metre deep.

Which is why all of New York's subway trains are coated in the same heat resistant ceramic tiles that Rockwell use on NASA's space shuttles.  And all the big sky-scrapers keep falling over.

Its not steam.  Its hot air from the sewers condensing in the cold air above ground, similar to seeing your own breath on a cold day.

It is steam - many of the buildings in NY are on a grid of high pressure steam pipes, used to power the heating systems.

There are over-pressure vents in the sewers, and the lines do occasionally leak
