If you have got it cleaned it will stay clean longer if it has a lid. If it doesn't have one you can make a cheap one out of some chipboard and a few pieces of timber.

Anything is possible if you devote enough resources to it. What exactly is the problem and what sort of tank is it? Plastic or metal etc.
Good idea April .............. I've found dead pigeons, rats etc in them before :o(

Turn off the cold supply to the tank, and run a hot tap until the tank is empty. There'll be an inch or two left in the bottom, which you'll have to get out with a big sponge!

Thank you both for your quick replies! It is a metal tank and although there's nothing dead in it, there appears to be "barnacles" for want of a better word, growing on the sides. I'm not too fussed letting the kids brush their teeth etc in the water now!
Hi april, you will probably find that the storage tank in the attic only supplies the hot water tank so your children should be safe enough doing their teeth. It is a good idea to clean it out sometimes though. Ours in the South West gets full of brown stuff that comes in with the water after there has been a burst pipe in the area.

Cold storage-tank often supplies cold taps in bathroom.
