Urrgghh, we have to pick out 2 songs for a funeral next week. I need to be able to get them easily on CD in normal high street shops. Would like something not too depressing, perhaps classical (am not one of those people who likes pop songs at funerals) Bearing in mind we wont actually hear much of them because it'll be a short service, and there will be no singing as there will only be 3 of us there. Does anyone have some suggestions of favourite/nice pieces?

You can come back now....
bednobs i don`t want to trivialise things, but do you want an instumental or lyrics. Do you want a song about loss or a celebration of life? I`ll give it some thought and see if I can come up with something x
Even if you don't pick this, remember her this way♥

I'm well known on AB for my belief that it should be illegal to arrange funeral or to attend them, so I might not be the best person to answer this question. However I also hope that I'm also known for respecting other people's beliefs and for trying to be helpful,so I'll have a go at answering your question.

Almost any piece of classical music that is called a 'funeral march' or 'requiem' would probably be too 'depressing' for your requirements. However Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D Minor is a 'serious' work that's not too 'heavy'. (It was played at my graduation ceremony). It's also so popular that it should be easily available in HMV (or similar). You can listen to it here to see if it meets with your needs

i think probably music, no lyrics please. Possibly fairly sombre, not entirely sure.
the region of things we were thinking were:
Mr b would like adagio in G minor (i don't really like it - too depressing)
i suggested abide with me played by grimthorpe colliery band (he didn't really like this)
we sort of think all things bright and beautiful might be nice, perhaps by a brass band
Tubular Bells............
I think all things bright and beautiful is beautiful, take care sweetheart.
We had a similar situation a while back for an old aunty who had no one but us.
We chose Cliff Richard singing 'The Lords Prayer'

Perhaps you can find an orchestral version of Beethoven's 'Ode to Joy' such as this one (which appears to be by a chamber orchestra or quartet)?

I`m afraid I`m a complete philistine when it comes to classical music. When I was young I always thought I would like classical music when I got older but it never happened. However, there is one piece of classical music that I just love. It`s a Beethoven piano concerto. My ipod details say - Beethoven Concerto for Piano and Orchestra No 5 in E flat op73 Adajio un poco moso. might not be to your taste bednobs but have a listen
