Can you use seaweed from the beach

I was wondering if you could gather seaweed from the beach to use as mulch for asparagus and if so do you have to do anything to it beforehand, ie rinse it, chop it up etc, thanks.

you may not be allowed to collect it...removing stuff from beaches apart from rubbish is strictly controlled
