Seeking electrical advice (white goods)

Our freezer has developed a purely electrical fault - it tripped the circuit breaker and does not now come on at all. Before scrapping it, I would like to hear thoughts on whether the problem is less likely to be the compressor itself than, say, the "starter". The coolant circuit is fine (was until it stopped running) but I am not greatly interested in replacing the compressor rather than buying a replacement freezer.

First thing is the most simple... take a good look at the electrical cord plugged into the wall. Sometimes the cord develops a short just where it plugs in due to the bend it usually makes. Maybe... maybe not, can't hurt. Look for discoloration, but just in case it is shorted and because ya'll use 220 volt power rather than our 110 here in the U.S., make sure the circuit breaker is off before removing for inspection...
