EArthing rod - Likely cost

Major electrical shorting problems in my home mean I now have to have an earthing rod installed.

Does anyone know how much this might cost? I realise it wont be 100% accurate as each is individual but am I talking tens, hundreds or more.

Can't get this even ordered until a full inspection has been done - which I am dreading as from what I can see most wiring is pretty ancient.

Any anecdotes / advice welcome

had new combi boiler fitted and thermostats on all radiators except one. Think plumber forgot one but he said that you have to leave one without thermostat is this true

The rod only costs a few quid .. there is also the bond cable to inside the property. If you called a local electrician, they might do it, test and connect up for less than 100 quid.

I have been told this HAS to be done by Electricty supplier who wont do it unless a pass electrical cert has been issued!

I don't think that is true ... but it has to meet their spec. Ask a good local electrician .. he will know, I should think : )

you can do it yourself. have a read and if you fully understand it go for it, if not call in an electrician.

Any REGISTERED electrician can install an earth electrode.It seems an easy task however you need the test equipment to verify that the impedance readings are within regs,Sometimes you may need more than one to get the readings low enough.
We try to attain 100ohms or less in winter time.This work must be certified. Cost......1 rod..+ associated bits.....5mts 16mm earth cable......certificate....£150+vat

Have got a qualified electrician coming mondy (£170+VAT) to give a report - not a full cert.

From phone call he believes a full cert will not be needed!! but it might be

Really confused by all the companies giving different advice

However the one on Monday is County Coucil approved

Heres hoping it is a small job rather than a rewire
