I always set my own seeds away in Spring. However, the seeds I bought last year aren't germinating! The Bizzy Lizzys germinated within a week (this year's) but the marigolds and verbena still haven't except the odd one. I would have thought that a packet of seeds could last at least 2 years.... Do I hold on, or do I buy another packet?

did you check the sow by date on the back of the packet? Seed germination will drop on older seed, especially if the packet was opened last year and if the packets have not been stored correctly.
Seeds in open packets can be very suseptible to damp or changes in temperature, as well as ageing. You don't say where your seeds are germinating - in an unheated greenhouse or a warmer windowsill indoors which could make a difference. Also, seeds of difference sizes take different lengths of time to germinate. Most packets should last two years if stored in a cool dry place. Possibly yourmarigolds and verbena don't like the lower night temperatures. Wait a few days and if nothing much has happened perhaps you need to try some fresh seed.

Thanks for your answers; The seeds are stored in their original packets in a drawer inside the house and now they're in soil on a shelf above a radiator so getting enough heat. The bizzy lizzies are doing really well. 3 weeks is too long I think so going to buy some more but will leave these for another week. At 4,50€ a packet they don't come cheap! Thanks again.
