I have inadvertantly flooded my room, the carpet is soaking. I've done my best to soak up some of it with towels and sheets etc.. I guess all that's left to do is open the window and wait for it to dry? Any suggestions on speeding that up? Would a de-humidifier help and where would I get one of those?

Cheers
China.

Sorry to hear of your problem - a dehumidifier would help but remember you have to have some heating in the room so that the water can evaporate, and then the dehumidifier would collect the evaporated water. Another thing, if you have an electric cleaner like a vax carpet shampooer, you could suck most of the water out of the carpets. After you have done this with the dehumidifier, and the cleaner if you can get hold of one, then open the windows and doors and get as much fresh air into the room as possible. When you think it has dried out it might be best to turn a bit of the carpet back to check that things are O.K. underneath. Hope this helps. Someone out there might have better ideas. Best of luck to you.

Thank you... I suppose trying to suck the water out with a hoover probably isn't going to help much then? In a marvellous twist of fete, the heating isn't working. The window is wide open though.

Just on the verge of tears of desperation actually Triggs.
I'd use a Vax or similar first to get out as much water as possible... then take the carpet out (and underlay): yes, a pain but no matter how well you think you've removed all the water, some will remain in the fibres and its going to start stinking if left down.

What type of floor is underneath?
Question Author
A hard one? I don't know babe... I can't start taking the carpet up or anything as I live in nursing accomodation. Maybe I should just go and confess... It's such a pain. And I'm such a numpty!
Mistakes happen... bite the bullet and confess... at the end of the day its just a flooded floor... there are far more important things to worry about...

...like what's for lunch...
Question Author
Smiles sheepishly

Yeah... I just don't want to get in to trouble... Or pay for it! But considering the advice I'm being given I'd have to go buy that vax thingy and a de-humidifier to make it right myself so I'll be paying for it anyway!

I think I'll be something fatty and deep fried for lunch... :c(

It'll get sorted one way or the other... just go with the flow (hee hee)...

Anyway... on to those more important things... you have a Nurses uniform?
Question Author
Ok, I will... They're going to hate me. So far since moving here I've managed to lock myself out and walk around a ledge to get back in my room (I live on fifth floor and it was a sunday), locked myself out while in the shower and had to go downstairs wrapped in a towel to get back in and now I've flooded the place...Sigh... I don't think I have a low cut enough top to wear when confessing this. Or big enough boobs for that matter...

Right... I'm going to go confess.
Question Author
No to the nurses uniform I'm afraid. I do have a wenches outfit somewhere in storage though.
You sound a bit scatty pmsl... in an endearing way...
Question Author
A 'BIT'?! It's fortunate that I'm endearing, put it that way... I have some very long suffering friends ;0)

pmsl... I like a big woman...

Hang on... no I don't...
Question Author
Effing chuckle brothers! ;0) (Looks just like me actually).

So spot of luck... I bumped in to some maintenance guys as I was going downstairs and joked with them about having a de-humidifier... Turns out they have a water hoover! Anyway, one of them is hoovering my room as I type despite my protests that I can do it! I actually feel quite bad that he's doing it but at least it's getting done.

And yes.. I know I'm a spoilt brat!
china how many times, lying on the floor pouring wine into your gob straight from the barrel is going to end up in a disaster. stop being a cheapskate and buy some glasses
Question Author
But I break all the glasses I buy!
Sounds though your worries are nearly over - I should think the place is insured in any case.
