try petrol
But dont light it.
haha-
anyhow- i hope your rug is restored to its former glory
Are we talking about a rug on the floor or "rug" as in wig?
i was talking about the third option
:<)
petrol certainly removes tar from car panelwork, fairly sure it would on carpet but you really need to try it on a small patch first before you get to carried away,

MAKE SURE THE ROOM IS WELL VENTILATED !!!!!
The same thing happened to me on my cream carpet. Spray some WD40 and pat it into the tar. With a clean cloth or kitchen roll wipe it towards the centre. When you have done this to your satisfaction, get a clean soapy cloth and give it a bit of a scrub. Worked for me...not a mark left!

go to the local auto factors and get a spray tin of brake and clutch cleaner...it's what they use in carpet factories to remove oil stains etc from carpet..belive me ...i know!!!...just spray it on and rub really hard with an absorbent cloth.
I agree with crapmemory, I had tar on the stairs carpet and used the good old WD40 with a load of tissue and it worked.....
