I would like to know who recorded "I Heard It On The Grapevine" first, Marvin Gaye or CCR, many thanx.

believe it was the temptations, before either of these two.. not absolutley positive, but pretty sure ;~)
I was thinking it was Gladys Knight and the Pips, but out of the two acts mentioned it would have been Marvin Gaye who made the song popular.  THE definitive version.
It was Martha Reeves who did the original version, although Marvin's is the most famous & it's the arrangement on his version that people would usually cover since.
i really like both Marvin's version, and the extended rockier version by Creedence Clearwater Revival, i know this doesn't add  to the above answers, but its not often you get CCR mentioned!
The original was was recorded by Credence Clearwater Revival & written by John Fogarty the bands lead singer
The Marvin Gaye/Gladys Knight version was written by Barrett Strong and Norman Whitfield, so did CCR do a totally different song?

Same song actually - found this on songfacts.com:

Creedence Clearwater Revival released an 11-minute version in 1970. It was one of the few songs CCR recorded that they didn't write.
