I have an east facing, quite dull garden and many of the plants have rotten leaves. Am I doing something wrong, or am I just being too lazy in dead-heading?

What kind of plants?

They are inherited, so I am not sure. Generally, it is larger, green shrubs. Sorry :-) maybe too vague.
Are they actually shrubs(usually with a woody stem) or are they perennials, with a softer stem. If the latter that's quite normal for now.
Not enough light is there a wall that you could paint white to reflect light.... I have a south facing wall , sound perfect but is a courtyard garden .....but with a couple of cars parked as well one of them is silver and reflects light to other side of what would be a dodgy cold and dark area.... reflected heat and light is nearly as good
