Its not so much the size of a chimney but more the fireplace and size of room. Look here:

Thanks for the reply terambulan. I think that I may not have made myself clear in my original post, what I would like to do is to remove the existing gas fire fronted gas back boiler and replace it with a wood burning stove plus free standing gas boiler. To fit the wood burning stove into the chimney breast, we would need to open up the 'hole' at the back of the grate so I thought that we could make an inglnook type fireplace. I wondered if there were fire restrictions which involved asbestos etc. and how the existing chimney breast would have to be supported.......a beam ot what?
Do you have a "modern" type fire surround - and, if so, do you think there is a bigger recess behind it that has been infilled?

Thanks 'The Builder' for the reply. The whole chimney breast has been stone clad (it was like it when we bought the place) and the chimney breast seems to be of a standard size. I have seen the back of the fire place when the engineer takes out the front fire to service the boiler. I would think that it the chimney breast is just a 'normal' one, whatever that is!!
if there's a back boiler fitted then the chimney breast is almost certainly big enough to take a wood burning stove,

as for modifying the fireplace you need to get a builder in t advise and quote.
