What are the actual calculations to convert 293 cubic feet of gas to cubic metres. My gas bill says it should be multiplied by 2.83. Surely this is not right.

There are 35.3 cubic feet in a cubic metre.
But gas meters measure volume of gas in units of 100s of cubic feet, so when you divide 100/35.3 you do get 2.83.
So it is right.
