Small shallow holes

I am encountering small shallow holes (3/4'' to 7/8'') in my back yard. The ground is very hard and dry. It has been a dry summer but the grass is still reletively green. we live in Louisville, KY. any sugestions?

If you have squirrels and any nut producing trees,oaks etc., your description fits the size of holes they attempt dig to bury winter cache. If ground is that hard, they may not be able to complete job...
You may also have an oppossum, skunk or some other critter digging for grubs or worms. Newt
