you can get the locking handles here

http://www.axminster.co.uk/product-Axminster-L ocking-Handles-22463.htm

but they are all metric threads so may not be suitable out the box, though I would make a new stud with a metric thread on one end and a thread to suit the lathe on the other.

what make is the old lathe?

if it's a Colchester

if other make, such a myford

Think he said a whitworth, would that be right?
Question Author
Sorry its a clarkes.
my god.... does he mean it's a whitworth lathe? or the handle requires a whitworth thread?

If it's a whitworth lathe how old is the lathe? they are musuem
pieces normally, as far as I'm aware they've not been made for over 100years!

Lol warned you i knew nothing about lathes didn`t i?? No its the thread thats a whitworth ( i think ) the Lathe is a Clarkes.
ahhh, thats better...

I can't find any whithworth thread locking handles but will ask my father later, he is the expert on old lathes :)

though would it not be possible to drill the whitworth thread out and re tap a metric thread in the hole to enable a more modern handle to be used.

or buy a larger metric thread locking handle and turn the stud down to the correct size and cut a whitworth thread on the handle to suit the lathe.

Now im well and truely lost lol, will ask him tho.
hehe :) I will check with my father either later today or tomorrow as he is an expert on old engineering machinery, my knowledge on the subject has only been gained from being surrounded by that sort of stuff as a kid. He has loads of books and magazines on the subject so may know of somewhere to get the part.

But the fact your dad has a lathe would indicate he is fairly competent at metal working so it shouldn't be a hard job to modify a newer handle to fit.
Question Author
I do know its not metal but wood he works with, so got that bit right lol, i have told him what you mentioned and he had just said that to my mum so your both on the same wave length so we might all get somewhere with a bit of luck, thanks for asking / going to ask your father for me. Speak soon. Can you mail me here please
