Just moved house and found a strange little cartridge attached to the water pipe under the sink. It is a 'combi care compact 'and recommends replacement every 12 months.Any one know what it is for, and what happens if I just leave it and dont replace it. and how much/where I get them from. I no plumber so I dont fancy calling in a plumber every 12 months to change it

is it to do with hard water and looking after your boiler?
It reduces the limscale build up, Unless hard water in your heating system is treated, scale builds up in the heat exchangers pipework and emersion heater elements. Only 1.5 mm of scale build up will increase your energy consumption by 12% per year and eventually lead to system failure. You do not need to be a plumber to replace the cartridge To change turn of water plus drain system pressure ( open the hot and cold taps ), loosen the top grub screw using an allen key then twist the old one of, replace with new unit relock allen screw, might be worth using some silicone grease on the o ring though.. They cost about 20 - 25 to buy and are easily available.
