I have an old glass bowl that belonged to my mother in law but the whole of the bowl looks brown not just where it has been used. Has anyone any ideas on what I can use to clean it.

washing up liquid and just a tiny bit of bleach might help.
If the problem is inside, try putting some rice grains in and swirling them around to act as a mild abrasive.
Good luck.
:-)
Warm water with some lemon juice or white vinegar.

i put ornaments and glass lamp shades in the dishwasher a couple of times a year - makes them sparkle! also vases come out like new. if you have one try putting them in there im sure it will do the trick.

be careful if you are thinking about putting your bowl into the dishwasher, it could crack it. I have successfully used steradent tablets, for false teeth, ( not mine I hasten to add, my uncle's) put a piece of metal cutlery in the bowl that extends over the top, to conduct the heat, and then pour in boiling water, leave for a while, rinse and dry. I also wonder if the cillit bang that is suitable for calcium/lime scale deposits might work. that doesnt need hot water, might be worth a try.
methylated spirits and a cotton bud.
