We took our roof off on yesterday to discover a birds nest with 4 baby birds in it at the bottom edge of the roof. Obviously working from top down we have to continue with the work now as we have no roof.

So we moved the nest slightly in the hope that mum would continue to care and we could continue to work around, however today we discovered 3 birds were dead and one very lively bird left.

Assuming mum has now abandoned them we placed the last bird in an old hamster cage with most of the old nest and have been feeding it worms and maggots this afternoon, which it has taken gratefully.

Now I have discovered we should not be keeping the bird, however I cannot find out what I should do from anyone. Any ideas?

I would phone the RSPCA. If they wont help then any local animal rescues should be able to help you. I rescued a bird from one of my cats a few years ago. They came and took the bird to a bird sanctuary they have got at Crewe. It did not look to be injured. Just shocked. The bloke who came said he was quit e confident that it would survive. Thank goodness. I love my cats but they do have their down side. I do everything I can to prevent them from catching birds. They have not caught a bird since we moved here 6 years ago. Though they have had the odd frog.
