With great regret my husband (now 80) and I (not far behind) have to move from our beautiful three storey house (which has high, narrow stairs, and one loo on the middle floor) to a smaller two storey one, with loos on both floors. This will mean that if (Heaven forbid) either of us becomes incapacitated, we could install a stair-lift, so still have the run of the house. As we will be trying to squeeze the contents of three reception rooms in to one 'through room', there will be much decision making as to what we can bear to part with! My husband has always had the use of an old built-in cupboard, away from radiators, and generally of an even temperature, to store his wine. The only suitable area in the 'new' house would be under the stairs, IF the space could be opened up and fitted with racks. Has anyone out there opened up this space? Is it safe to do so? And who would I get to do such a job if so? Carpenter? Builder? ANY advice would be most welcome! Thank you in advance.. Mairzeydotes

A Carpenter / Joiner will have fit the staircase in the first place and then would have built the spadrel (wall) below it boxing off the under drawing. It would be a simple job for a Carpenter to open it back up again he would know exactly what can be done and what is safe to do etc...
Like gasman said, it should be a very easy process for a joiner to do.

The area under the stairs has been opened up in both my own house and my parents'.

It will give a good bit of extra space for you, so is well worth the effort.
