Is there any way of getting scratches out of chrome? (Light scratching to drum kit hardware.) I seem to remember reading something about rubbing it with aluminium foil, but I don't want to risk it...

Aluminium foil is good for cleaning chrome & I used it with success on a chrome stacking unit we have in the bathroom that had slight rust deposits on it. Could you not try it on a small area where it wouldn't show?
Perhaps Bar Keepers Friend might help?
The problem with chrome is that it's very hard, usually harder than the metal underneath, so smoothing out scratches is not easy.
But 'Solvol Autosol' is one of the best chrome polish pastes there is. Comes in a gold, black, and white tube at around 3.50. Available in my local Focus store, car accessory shops, and in many independent ironmongers. With a bit of effort, it'll even remove the blueing from motor bike exhausts.
