Is that big enough to poke your finger into yet?! I'd guess you are subsiding. Contact a consulting engineering firm. They can help.

same as doolallygirl says subsidance if it is that wide a gap seek help fast i'd say.

If they're horizontal cracks, your plaster is ancient and urgently needs replacing. If they're vertical-ish... Hmmm... Don't want to depress you.. :o( Get a surveyor in quickly.

cement a piece of glass 6 inches long 1inch wide across the crack leave it and check everyday if the glass cracks you;ve got a problem??
