Burnt stains on iron

Does anyone have any useful tips on how to get rid of these marks - they are driving me mad!??

turn the iron up to it's hottest and then rub, with a lot of elbow grease, the burnt on bits with a cotton handkerchief or tea towel. this usually works for fresh burnt on bits. if they're old, well- burnt- on marks, then i use a small piece of fine wire wool when the iron is completely cold. does the job every time.
you can buy iron cleaner stuff in a stick format that you rub on in robert dyas
when the iron is cooling (not cold and not too hot) i normally rub over with a scourer that can be used on non stick pan. does the trick.
Use a brillo pad, and gently rub over the iron while it's warm. Wipe and then dry with a soft cloth.
