How do you get rid of moles in the house? On two separate occasions we have seen it run across our living room. A mouse trap would be useless. Any ideas?

Are you sure that it's a mole? They're hardly ever seen above ground. (There are people who've had mole hills appearing in their gardens for decades but who've never seen a mole). If it's got a tail, it's a rat (or a shrew or a vole or . .) Moles don't have tails.

Whatever it is, it probably won't be around for long if you get a cat ;-)

Its not a rat or a mouse. It has a dark shiny coat and is about 2 to 3" long. I don't think it had a tail although not sure on this one. It was able to escape into a 20mm round hole in the floorboards.

My wife hates cats especially other peoples and is forever clearing up the mess.
It doesn't sound like a mole - they are a bit bigger than that (as adults 5"+) and have the most ferocious looking *hands* you have ever seen - here's a picture of an adult mole
What you saw was a mouse. As said before moles stay underground away from humans because above ground they are very slow. Mice commonly come inside houses when the weather gets very cold.
What you should do is make sure all food not in tins or jars is placed in wall cupboards. Have a good clean around esp. near pipes doorways and skirting boards noting if there are any droppings (mice leave loads behind them so are easy to spot even on carpets ) Note where the greatest activity is and tomorrow go to B&Q and get a couple of traps for 5.00 or so. Put the traps down where you've seem the droppings / activity and hopefully you'll catch them. In the meantime clean around every day to see if there are any more droppings.
Please........if you are going to trap it., get humane traps. Why kill it if you dont have to? Its just trying to survive. It is more frightened of you than you are of it. Then you can let it go, well away from your house to ensure that it does not get back in.
It might have been a little vole - they've got short tails.

Its certainly not a mouse. As Kleiber said it points to a little vole or something related to that species.
Mice are nocturnal, voles are not, generally. More likely a vole.
