Too much. We had a quote last October and they wanted over 6000. That wasn't even top of the range. That one was connected to a switch board and if anything went wrong they could fix it through the board remotley. We got a local company out (corgi Reg) and it cost just under 2000. I would price about if i was you

we had a quote of 5,500 but this included replacement of 4 radiators too. We got several more quotes, 1 being the same as British Gas (another big company) and one slightly cheaper and one a lot cheaper (2, 400).
Two years ago I paid 3000 to british gas for combi boiler and a one replacement radiator. At the same time I had the chimney flue relined and new gas fire installed by a local contractor.
British gas came mob-handed and did the job in a day which was brilliant BUT: the boiler they put in had a gas leak and they had to replace a valve; their safety survey established that the earth to our house had been removed by gas contractors in the road outside so the ENTIRE STREET had to be dug up - not BG's fault; and the change in pressure caused by the new combi boiler made the loo and the kitchen hot tap leak. In my opinion BG did not do enough to emphasise the problems that grafting a new combi onto old radiators and taps can cause.

The local contractor who did my fire and chimney took weeks and were daft as brushes although their work was eventually very good. Things like, stacking the new flue liner with the scrap for the scrap man to come and collect....disappearing off site if I didn't stay in the house...the usual billhooks I suppose.

Anyone considering British Gas for central heating or a boiler change should ask themselves if it doesn't seem like overcharging when they can offer 'free' a shower or 800 of gas.

FYI Cleversod, I was happy with the price for the work BG did as it equated all the quotes given elsewhere. It paid the wages of the four blokes on site, paid for the removal of old header tank and boiler from very inaccessible loft, the installation of new combi and new rad and clean up all their mess. It works really well and their workers did not use bad language, play loud radios or show their bumcracks, unlike the private contractors who did my fireplace / chimney work.
I have no ability to do any of this work myself so am quite happy to pay competent experts to take it on.
Perhaps the teams put in by BG vary across the UK but me, I'm well happy with the speed and precision of delivery i got.

Still comes back to the main point ,Clever me old chum, which is what you price your labour at. I've heard the girls saying you were easily bought.......

I Regually price against british gas and i tend to find we are at least 50% cheaper.

The last job was a replacement straight swop combi & Bg wanted 3250, we quoted 1250!!!
