Don't know if i am in correct 'section' here, but does anybody know if there is a government grant for rewiring private dwellings, just had to have new meter fitted and the electrician says it is well overdue as it is the old 'rubber' covered wiring, bungalow is approx' 40 - 45 years old and i just can't afford !

Depends where you live. There are grants in South Ribble:

What council do you live in?

hi Ethel i live in good old Wigan
Good on yer Ethel, the thing is though phizzy, you say you can't afford it, well if you don't get the grant, please consider it very carefully, get a bank loan or extend your mortgage, in the meantime, don't overload the circuits, try not to use heavy appliances too often your life is worth a lot more than the cost of rewire, rubber wire is ok as long as it has not been disturbed or used to supply heavy equipment over the years, good luck hope you do get a grant sorted, Ray
phizzy, have a look at your local council site.
Go on to available services page and type in "grants".
It looks as though some money could be available to you, if your home is deemed to be dangerous or hazardous.http://www.wigan.gov.uk/Services/Housing/Priva teSectorHousing/HomeFitnessAssistance.htm
