I have been told that I need to have a stability chain fitted to my gas cooker. Is this correct. I mean how often does a gas cooker fall over? Looks like corgi or whoever creates these new an wonderful laws are out to rip of joe public yet again by allowing fitters to charge what the hell they like to get the job done.

Either a stability bracket or stability chain.

My cooker is waist high, and I really cannot envisage it tipping over accidentally, but it is because the cooker is connected by flexible hose.

It also prevents the cooker being pulled out too far, causing damage to this hose.
the purpose is to stop a child pulling over the cooker over a small amount and thus tipping hot water/food onto themselves.
the hose has to be in a certain position to avoid kinks and dragging on the floor. the old hose connection has to point 6/12 o clock to avoid kinks and thus wear, which is why mulitipoint hoses are popular as they swivel and thus hang straight.
there are dozens of other dimensions, mostly regarding proximity to combustible surfaces/worktops and safety features in the cooker itself to check ie flame safety devices like fires, boilers etc
this is after the overcharging fitter has considered your safety as regards ventilation and flueing
would you like to reconsider your complaint and give the guy a chance, he has paid a fortune in training with retests every 5 years that are never less than 1000 and a week off work for the test
my heart bleeds for these poor gas fitters. domini, you are right about charge what they like. the chain bit is a safety issue to stop people pulling the cooker out too far and ripping the mamby pamby poorly fitted copper gas pipe off of the wall that the other corgi bloke fitted, and saving you money by not having to call another corgi gas bodger out to tell you the whole house needs re-plumbing because" the last bloke didn't know what he was doing and its all wrong. " corgi authorised agents are government authorised crooks who think they can come into your house and dictate how you live because they went on a training course for out of work plumbers.
