Could the sport be 'tug of war' ?
Swimming- you touch the finishing line, but don't cross it.
The Cutty Sark
Woolwich Arsenal?
I think eddiebun's answer is more likely. I was a bit quick mine.
Why do some people guess answers? The person (if there has been one) who has given the correct answer then has to provide proof so that the person asking the question knows it is right.
I posted before I saw your link eddie.
Town Crier, because not everyone can be 100% sure of every answer all of the time. We're only trying to help.
No problem Geo, I'm sure we've all posted answers we're convinced are right, only to find someone who's narrowed their search to get a more definitive answer. I know I have !
And, like I do Geo - you did put a question mark -as I do when I'm not sure !
Yes, I agree geo0939, but guessing does not help does it? Wingnut could easily have found the answer him/herself but chose to come here for the answer. If you did not know the answer, what has been gained by guessing - Wingnut would still have had to check your answer, would he/she not?
It was an educated guess. I googled a map of the London Marathon with all the markers displayed. The 6 mile marker was beside the Woolwich Arsenal, so I suggested it with a question mark, as eddiebun noticed.

Hi! Thank you all for your quick responses :o)

I'm a she :o) and I did google the 6 mile landmark bit and it didn't come up with anything inparticular (wasn't even a mention of the cutty sark) so intead of trawling trying to find the answer I asked on here hoping someone would know as that is what this site is for.

I appreciate everyone's help thank you :o)
Ok, but I am sorry I see no point in guessing answers when there is a factual answer to the question. Either an answer is right or it is not. By guessing a person has obligated another to either give the correct answer or to provide proof that his/her answer is correct.

On cryptic crosswords, one may provide a question mark at the end of a guess to show that this may be correct but one cannot see why at that time - that is fair enough, of course - but on a question of fact, what good can guessing do?

I am not getting at you geo0939 but I just don't see how the orginal questioner can gain by guesses on factual questions.
Well Towncrier you've certainly put me in my place. I suggested 'tug of war' for the sport but did put question mark. I had feeling I had heard similar question before and that was the answer.I do find this kind of comment stops you, well me anyway, from suggesting possible answers. Will think twice before I jump in again.
