How old is the house ? if it was built within the last 30-40 years it is more than likely that the internal skin will be Breeze block, not very nice to look at, if it is an older house it is a job you could do yourself, but it is dusty work, if you not used to using kangos, I would say do it with a club hammer and Bolster chisel, it will take you ages unless the mortar is quite soft, then you will have to have brisks cleaned and probably re-pointed, I would get a quote from a builder first.

pretty sure the house is older than 40 years. you sound like you know your stuff and i think from what you tell me i need to get someone to do it who also knows what they are doing. was hoping it was a minor job but that all sounds a bit hardcore.thanks for your help
it is a very dusty job i did one in my cottage be prepared to cover all your furniture .start at the floor level with a small bolster doing a bit at a time.all over the wall but not knocking the plaster off what i did was get a big plastic see through sheet pin it to the wall top and sides make a small hole about 12 inches from the bottom and put a vacume pipe in when you start to knock the plaster off the vacume gets most of the dust .hope this helps .
