fiat punto 60 1998 - oil in air filter

i have the punto 60 1998 model - the oil level is fine - but it is coming out of the air filter housing - when i took off the front there is a puddle of oil! - the car drives ok but is very bitty - i presume there is oil in with fuel now? but how is this happening?
