My friend was looking at washer dryers and they appear to use twice as much water as a stand-alone washing machine, why would this be? Thanks in advance for any help.

Washer dryers are normally condenser dryers, that is they use a flow of cold water to condense the steam given off during drying and so are using water all the while the dryer segment is running.
Sorry Fitzer but I have a condensor tumble drier.

It is not connected to any water supply - it condenses the steam to water, collected in a reservoir.

Tony, it is a very good question and I do not know the answer.

I suggest you contact one or two of the manufacturers and ask them. I would be interested in the reply.
My apologies! I am so sorry, Fitzer - but you are right.

I found this:

Water consumption
For the purpose of washing, washer dryers use similar amounts of water as
washing machines. They also use water however for condensing the water from the
load during the drying part of the cycle (this has yet to be incorporated into the
modelling)

Well - I never knew that!
