Heat stain on Coffee Table

I have 3 white 'heat' stains on my 'antique-finish' coffee table. My wife thinks these are just stains that can be removed with toothpaste. I think they are 'burnt-in' to the wood.
Whatever they are, does anybody know of a way of removing them, without having to re-varnish the table?

i've been told that if you mix cigarette ash with a little linsead or bees wax polish to form a paste and rub that into the marks they should disappear.
Put a dry tea towell over them then rub a steaming hot iron over them for a a few seconds at a time, keep doing this for a few minutes and they will go
I agree with Elvis..used that method on my oak table about 6 months ago and was amazed that it really worked!
But use a warm iron only..don't use the steam!
ps... my wife said she had a white hair growing on her head...oh was I tempted ;o)
'Topps ringaway' from hardware stores or some supermarkets, a small bottle lasts years and works!!! TOOTHPASTE??????
