Can anyone tell me why when I record a program on one dvd recorder I can't play the recording on just any dvd player. Very frustrating.

Think you have to finalise DVD.

Apart from finalising, the DVD kit you use to record must record in a format which the DVD kit on which you intend to play understands.
Check that both machines (and the DVD disc) have got the same format code
(usually DVD + R or RW, or DVD - R or RW). The plus and minus signs indicate different formats!
