Bead curtains

My kitchen leads directly off from my hallway/dining area, and it is not practical to fit a kitchen door. I'd like to screen it off a little and thought a bead curtain would help (I also gather they help deter flies). Are they considered a bit naff though?

Only if you think they are.
Still see plenty of these small saloon-type swinging doors, which may be another consideration for you.
Of course its down to your own choice, and you can get some really nice one's - but as you asked the question, I have to say that I think they are very naff. As wildwood suggested, saloon doors would be much better - they are unique, and add a cool touch and you could paint them or varnish them.
Just think how irritating that swish, swish, clickety click is EVERY time you go through the doorway. But then again you might like that - each to their own.
I had a bead curtain once upon a time, and it spent it's whole life being hooked back out of the way! Sort of defeated the object a bit! A nice idea but not very practical!
Oooops, just noticed my apostrophe error! Sorry everyone! :-)
i have a bead curtain at my backdoorfor keeping flies outside and it works. the beads are transparent and light bright colours so they are very cheerful. there are nice ones out there. my only problem is that the cat thinks its the best toy i ever bought him, especially as the cat flap is in the back door, so several strands have broken off, but i like it and will be getting another one when he finally kills it.

apostrophe catastrophe.. oops Flirty, now your 4 it ;-) Bead curtains naff? I think naff is naff, more individuality and freedom of expression wanted :-)
I have no naffometer opinion, but if its between your kitchen and dining room, you will either have to serve and clear the table one handed, to keep a hand for holding back the beads, walk through the beads backwards, or dangle them in the food
You can get some very nice ones; I have one in the bedroom for decorative purposes, but I agree with woofgang on the practicality issues. If it's for the kitchen, how about a voile panel instead? Would still screen off the area, and easier to manoeuvre.
To Alan who answered my question as to why I could only get hot water out of the cold water faucet on my washing machine.  You told me to check that the hot & cold water supplies were on.  I had thought of that & they are both on full.  I tried them again this morning & still have the same problem.  This is a complete & annoying mystery, so I am back where I started.  I do thank you anyway.  It would seem as if this was the problem, but it's not.
