Freeze the tar until it is brittle, with ice packs, ice cubes...

Then scrape it off with a plastic spatula or other blunt flat non-scratch tool.

You will probably be left with stains.

Have plenty of kitchen paper towel handy. Put a little WD40 on a clean cloth and dab at the stains. Rub vigourously with the clean kitchen towel.
Repeat if necessary.

Mop with very hot water and your usual floor cleaner to remove all traces of wd40.
Try on here, useful for all types of stain, but has a specific section on tar

I was told once to put butter on it and it will come off after a lot of rubbing. Brenda
brenda - how do you get the oil stain from the butter out then?
I've used Vanish soap on the car to get tar marks off and it works so it should on your floor
I'd use White Spirit if on hard surfaces (laminate, tiling) that are impervious to liquid.
