It's so long ago that I chanted these things in school that I had forgotten about rods, poles and perches. A perch would appear to be a unit of length, not area:

Is this the telegraph crossword by any chance or is this a wild co-incidence

Hi all,

I have been offered a little piece of land in Ireland, it is part of a field that was inherited by my sister. Unfortunately it is measured in Perches and I have tried everywhere to find what area a Perch is. I am trying to relate it with a Tennis court or to a Cricket Square, for example. Hence my request for L x W.

Thank You

Hi SteveD,

Thank you for the "link", I agree it is related to length (16.5ft) but how do you ascertain what the width is?

Cheers
That's spooky

Well in Ireland a Perch is a length 21 of feet

http://www.sizes.com/units/perch.htm

Note on the web page that there's a reference that a square perch was also called a perch so that it was somewhat confusingly an area as well

So 9 perches as an area would be 3 perches as a length on each side or 63' x 63'

That seems to be confirmed here but note they are referring to an English perch of 5.5 yards
