I've got a hole in my kitchen wall from where an extractor fan was removed. It's about the size of a saucer. Can I fill it with normal filler?

Screw a piec of old board to the outside wall, fill void with expanding foam, let it set then skim over the surface with plaster inside and an exterior plaster / concrete outside ... thats what I did 2x years ago and it fine !
