for example in a carpet, when you rub your hand over it to flatten the pile this is the directional pile. when you rub it the other way as if to lift the pile, that is not !!

Think of a piece of velvet. The way that you run your hand over it and it feels smooth and looks shiney is the direction of the pile and the way that you run your hand over it and it feels rough and looks matt is against the direction of the pile.
