Allotment rage!

Sorry, but I've just had a letter about this, and I want a rant.

Our village has 16 allotments. I've been after one for over 2 years now (along with several other people on the list). But what really annoys me is that the council are letting 3 existing plotholders, who don't tend their plots, keep them. They are almost all grass and weeds. I want a plot and I want to use it properly! Grrrr!

Is this fair? Any suggestions as to what I can do?

it happens here as well, we have quite a few that are just used as dumping grounds by the holders, but the council still let them keep them!

I'm in Derbyshire, but the allotments are owned by the parish council.

Well, one in particular has been untouched two years. It's next to the road, so I often see it. And it really annoys me every time I do!

this happened to me, after 3 years seeing the plot i wanted become evermore overgrown, i went along to one of the local councillors surgeries and had a word, within a week the allotmants officer had done an inspection, ordered the offending plotholder off and i had my (rather overgrown) patch. In my case it was the allotments officer not doing his job. They should do an anuual inspection and send letters out to people whos plots are not maintained, then a follow up visit and eviction if necessary.

I recently watched a docu about allotments and my council allotment officer was on and she said she checks all the allotments regularly to make sure they are being used properly - and if not the tenant gets a letter asking them if it's too much for them to handle and maybe they should give up half, and let someone take over the other half... or if not they ahve to give it up...I have been waiting 4 years so far for one!
