Thanks to an earlier discussion about water rates on Answerbank, have now discovered that we're entitled to a reduction of 17.50 off our Thames Water annual bill, since we have no highway drains in our road, and the water from our roof falls down the drainpipes into a soakaway, rather than into the main sewers.
If Thames Water supply you, check the "How your bill is calculated" clause on the back of your bill. You too might be entitled to the discount. Other waterproviders may have similar concessions.

Far better in your pocket than Thames Water's.

Hope you've informed all your neighbours.
What I find most irritating about this is the 'presumption' that a new dwelling has a connection to the main drains from the downpipes. It was all well and good when this policy was first introduced to adopt such a policy because Water Utilities had no way of knowing. But 2 years ago I built a new house in a rural area with no highway drains at all and with house plans that clearly showed soakaways (Thames Water had these because I paid them to connect my drains to the sewer), I STILL had to apply for the rebate. Pathetic.
