As a newbie to the world of photography ,can anybody recommend a half-decent ,reasonably priced SLR type camera and perhaps a website where i might get a good deal? or might it be worth getting a secondhand one .? thanks.

I bought my Digital Camera from this site, cheapest I found. Although I don't know much about SLR cameras myself. http://www.pixmania.co.uk
Canon EOS 300. I've had this for a couple of years now and it's a fantastic camera. Lots of automatic modes and manual ones for the more adventurous. Starting prices for all "brand" SLRs tend to hover around 250ish and I've seen the EOS300V at jessops.com for that price. Not sure if internet retailers can discount too much at that price unless they give you a cheap lens.
The EOS starsky recommends is a good camera - light, easy to use and fantastic with a good ultrasonic lens. Look on ebay where you should be able to find a good body, with a couple of lenses for a few hundred second hand. This said, film can be cumbersome for a learner unless you want to get into development yourself - It's just a bit tricky to really learn when there's a considerable delay in getting your photos back. Digital SLRs are an alternative, but are out of your price bracket I suspect, and the best out and about at the moment is probably the EOS-10d - with lenses it'll set you back just over 2 grand.
