I have a traditional red brick fireplace which since decorating doesn't go with the room. We want it a lot lighter , ( preferably not red!) so what do you recommend? Is there a special kind of paint or limewash that is suitable for brickwork?

I saw a program on TV where they lightened a brick fire place by lightly painting it with watered down magnolia emulsion. It didn't cover it completely it just toned it down a bit BUT if you do something like that then remember that it will be impossible to remove so if I were you I would think carefully about it before doing it.
