Due to me being a lazy boy I've now got a path worn in my lawn between the house and the garage which I wouldn't have, if I had bothered to use the path.

Rather than take the long way round I'm going to put some square 10" paving stones where the wear is in the lawn - problem is - How do I put them down ? Do I just cut a bit of turf out and lay them down or do they have to be cemented in?

No need to cement them in - but you should lay them on a bed of sand.

Cut the turf out, add a layer of sand - but don't pack it down.

Place the slab on the sand and tap it down so it rests just below turf level - this will make mowing the lawn easy.

That's it!

If you're not going to have a continuous path but just a few paving slabs as stepping stones, will you be the only one using them? If not, make sure that they are close enough together to allow a woman to walk on them, bearing the in mind that they have a much shorter step than men - otherwise your other half will spend half her time walking on muddy grass in between the slabs.
As for laying them, I'd suggest placing them where you want them to be, cutting out the turf around them with a spade to a slightly deeper depth than the slabs, and putting in a layer of sand to keep them stable. Make sure they don't protrude above the surrounding area of turf otherwise you'll have a problem every time you mow the lawn.
