I've just discovered a tiny clump oh rhubarb growing between some wonky slabs in my new ( and very neglected )garden. Will it be okay if I dig it out and replant it? can I put it in a big container or if not, does it prefer a sunny or shady spot. Thanks in advance.

It'll do well if you tranplant it now. If you want to try a container make sure it's quite large. At least 18 to 20 inches long and wide and at least 12 to 18 inches deep. We'vee grown the crowns in half-sawn whiskey barrels and they've done well...

Thanks for that Clanad. I'll go and rescue it tomorrow.

ours grows quite close to the pond in a shady area if that helps and we have about 5-8 crumbles out of it....

We transplanted some a couple of years ago and it's only this spring it's really got going again. So you may have to wait a while before you get a rhubarb!

Move it into a container, quick!! Actually, when we moved into our present house there was a single patch of rhubarb about 6' x 4' that appeared to have been there for 100 years. It took a JCB to get the huge spongy root out (back-hoe, Clanad!). And if you leave any of the root in, it'll come back. Wet, dry, sunny, shady, almost impossible to kill off. One time my dad cleared rhubarb from a garden by throwing the bits over a hedge onto waste ground. Some landed in the hedge. The next year they happily sprouted - in mid-air!
