Has anyone ever claimed for a carpet/sofa on their household insurance before... but not legitimately? If so, what did you say to the insurance company and did you get away with it?

Shame on you goldheart if this is what you're planning. This is the reason why the rest of us are paying such high insurance premiums. Save up to buy your new carpet like the rest of us have to!

Sorry 'Miss Goody Goody never done anything wrong before' I bet you just love going through the postings on here, pointing your finger at people....

This website aids those that wish to talk frankly and honestly about any subject and we like and hopefully get both honest and NON JUDGEMENTAL answers back, no matter what the subject.

i had my carpet changed LEGITAMETLY when i accidently dropped half a tin of fence paint, which stinks of white spirit over my carpet a week after I moved in. Insurers came round, took one sniff and said "change the lot". The tin dopped in my hall way spilling into the living room. As my living room has no door, as it leads directly to the hall and stairs it means it is one continuous carpet. They changed my sitting room, hall, stairs and through lounge in one go. All i paid is 50.00

This really happened, but they never checked, so if I was fraudilent, i'd have got awy with it, My daughter, (she's Autistic), always insisted on going to the toilet on the carpet in her bedroom, obviously the carpet was ruined, so we decided to put a laminated floor in instead, it worked, but when I phoned the insurance company, they just asked how much the carpet was worth, and paid it, no checking, that paid for the floor, and a bit over.

But I wouldn't suggest anyone else doing it, they just might decide to check.

My daughter was renewing a large living room carpet a while ago in the house she had just bought and did not want it so she gave it to us, we stored it as we were decorating our lounge, my sister in law liked it so gave us 100 towards a new one and we bought a new one.

After she had the carpet for about 3 years she decided to get a new one, she accidently left her iron on purpose on the carpet and told the ins coy, they did come round to inspect it and said this was a very expensive carpet! they said they would pay out for a new top of the range carpet of her choice!

I think the reason insurance premiums are so high is because the companies are greedy and get away with it... So why shouldn't we? ;-)

Companies are very thorough these days and may refuse to pay out, even for reasons as you not having the original receipt. You'd need to check, but a general chat on the phone to someone at the company should reveal what you're likely to get away with...
