What's the best way to sand and paint a ceiling that has pine cladding and varnish on it?( I want to avoid getting it in my eyes and making a mess)

Sand it with a belt sander which has a dust collecter fitted and wear googles but it will not stop you getting a very dusty kitchen.

If the varnish is not flaking, you might consider painting over it. Otherwise I'd use a medium grit and gently sand it with a circular motion to create a "key". Use a good quality non-drip paint, wear an old hat,put down dust sheets, O'h and some soft music, nothing too "up tempo"
A Pine Clad Ceiling...? Please tell me you have inherited this abomination and haven't clad your ceiling in pine?

Unfortunately it came with the house - I think someone got a job lot and decided to use it all up

Hi Music 123

Treat yourself to a 1 litre tin of ESP (Easy surface preparation), follow the instructions correctly (very easy) and then you can paint the ceiling. I did a whole kitchen, including cupboard doors and drawer fronts as well as the ceiling with superb results.

I bought the ESP from Homebase - about 8 - 10 per 1 litre tin. Much easier than sanding and no mess !!

Good luck.
