change the colour of the wool as you go. just tie one end to the other and trim the knot later.
Do not carry your yarn across more than 4 stitches, if you want to make wider stripes, you will need to wind yarn around bobbins. You can either purchase bobbins , use cardboard, or just make a butterfly (wrap yarn in a figure 8 around your thumb and index finger). Once you have completed the first row, your bobbins (if you are using them) will just hang on the back of your work. This way you carry the yarn across the work.
This a lot neater than a load of knots which have a tendency to come undone.
For horizontal stripes just start a new colour at the beginning of a row and depending on the number of rows carry the yarn up the side of the work .If they are wide stripes you can cut the yarn and weave it in afterwards.
P.S
This shows you exactly how to do the stripes.
