8down (6), 11a (6), 12 across (5), 23 down (6): these are all 'normal' with 2 letters added to the answer and should in any order be the answers to:

split smoothed over when I retired 4 (plus 2)

booty call that could sound music to my ears 4 (plus two)

set within new design of set 4 (plus 2)

sanded steel peg 3 (plus 2)

I think the  4 pairs of 2 letters to be added are th, ou, sa, nd

Also, is 3 down asked?

and if 3 down is asked

Question Author

many thanks toorak

do you like 'asked' for 3 down?

I have had a quick Look and ask + 2 looks like it fits

Question Author

sorry, 3down just needs 1 letter added to the answer to:

travelling up and down east sussex, kent  - and...? (5) -s-e-

I think 3 Down was Essex?

sanded (s)tee(l) = tee (peg) + th =teeth

3d was Essex = E(ast) S(ussex) backwards and forwards = ESSE + X (extra letter) and it is imperative that the extra letter to this clue is an "X" to ensure that the Roman Numerals add up to 1/4 of a thousand!

Thanks for the Essex parsing, JJ. I gave my answer (from memory) when there was no clue.

Question Author

many thanks to jj and n-a-c both

really the adding thing doesn't necessarily help the solver does it, it's just there for the setter, though one needs the pairs of letters I suppose

Quinol, thanks. I didn't bother at all with the adding up ... stuff!
