Strong weed killer while we still have EU laws on the books ? {Sucks in air, shakes head, and tuts} Naw, no such thing any more, not now we have to protect the weeds... er... I mean environment. Have you tried vinegar ?

^^^ That's both ruddy expensive and out of stock, Lankeela!

The RHS website suggests some products to look for in garden centres:

We had a problem with equisetum in a hay field years ago and you really need something heavy duty to get rid permanently. No point spending less and having to repeat the treatment.

I use SBK Brushwood Killer. I managed to get rid of persistent weeds by painting the leaves individually with a 1 inch paint brush.
I've had this weed on my rockery for a number of years. I (almost) manage to control it by hand tugging. A thankless task indeed!
It's also appeared in the cracks between the paving stones on my patio. A gardener friend suggested a generous squirt of Bramwell's distilled malted barley vinegar (29p / 568ml from Aldi).
I splashed out last week on a small area and it seems to have at least frightened the stuff, if not completely killed it. For 29p it's got to be worth a try! Probably OK for patios rather than borders though.
A local farmer may be able to help with something a bit dangerous.
Sodium Chlorate would do the trick if you could still get it. I have a tubful in the workshop but it’s 3% and pretty impotent.
