It seems to me that checking your phone regularly while you are out is a symptom of over-anxiety. And what are these undesirables that you want to look at from your living room? If you are that worried, then you have my sympathy, but I do feel it's a symptom of old age and isolation. If it brings some comfort, then go ahead, but the whole idea makes me feel uneasy. It must lead to a continual state of fear. What did we do in the olden days?
My doorbell phone notification is very distinctive so I don't keep checking my phone when I'm out and about. Even when I am at home it is not always possible to get to the door quickly so it's useful to know who's there and either ignore or ask to wait.
When I moved in to this house over 30 years many of my neighbour's houses were occupied during the day, mother's of young children, retired people. People walking past to the shops, kids playing out, people chatting.
Now the cul de sac is often like a ghost town with most houses empty during the day, or the neighbours getting straight in or out of the car.
Society has changed for a lot of us.

The main function (from a 'remote use' perspective), as Tigger has indicated, is simply to let you know when someone has rung your doorbell. If you can see that it's someone from Amazon, clutching that bodybuilding kit that you've ordered, you can then tell him/her to leave it behind the bins (or to put it inside your back gate, or wherever).

Those doorbell cameras also record motion and send alerts.
My neighbourhood group has posted several videos during the last few years of people trying to steal the cat converter, the car itself or break in to the house. Often thwarted because the neighbour has shouted out the window and called the police.
Yes, a dedicated CCTV system will do all that but a doorbell cam is a cheap, easy alternative

It could be a symptom of old age and isolation, I am (although I hate to admit it) an elderly lady living on her own and if I were to hear any commotion going on outside, I would be very scared and I wouldn't want to open my door or even look through a window. I would look at it as a security measure but I can't have one as I don't have a smartphone and I've no intention of getting one. So unless these things can be hooked up to a computer, I will have to do without.
