It's not a problem drinking hard water but not always good to drink softened water, filters are good for removing the chlorine taste. A water softener, the best option with added benefits shouldn't cost anywhere near 1000, more like half that. Electronic devices work to a limited degree but plumbed inline scale inhibiters are much better. These can have a replaceble canister or refill. Fitted in the hot water (cold) supply they last much longer as they have little effect on cold water.
Drinking hard water is better for you.

Steve,

There are a number of things you can do - fit a water conditioner - the best for very hard water is a powered electrolytic devise, such as Salamander's Cracker or Kalguard+, these are effective and economic (see www.salamander-engineering.co.uk ) or you could use a polyphosphate dosing devise but this does involve adding chemicals to the water. Filtering drinking and cooking water is something I've done for years and again have found Salamander's water filters exceptional - I have a diamond filter and change it about every six months. Even better, Salamander has a new website to buy water filter cartridges at a good rate (www.watertreatmentdirect.co.uk) and they have a good offer on the diamond as well. Don't fret about scale, it IS controllable but it healthy whereas softened water shouldn't be drunk. Good luck!
